Slaughtering Cows and Banku Sticks

Hey everyone!

Another great week has come and gone. We had another busy but great week! I hit my one year mark which is so crazy, still cant believe it. Time has gone by fast and I think it will get even faster from here. We have been teaching lots and pushing the work forward. Here are some of the highlights from the week

Tuesday was the start of a Muslim holiday out here. Apparently it is a three day celebration and they start it by slaughtering a cow. We fortunately have some Muslim friends and so we asked if we could participate. So they taught me how to kill the cow and how to skin it and how to use every single bit of it. They eat the majority of it. They said they don't eat like 1% of the cow. It was a good experience though. It brought me back to the days of anatomy and physiology at Bella Vista High School. Although this cow was much bigger then the cat we dissected. If I could describe the scene, it would be a bunch of Africans (and one white kid) huddled around this cow. No one has shoes and so everyone is barefoot in the dirt, as well as just stepping in the cows blood. I'll add some pictures so you can see it a bit. But that was definitely a highlight. As we were walking back to our apartment we saw at least another 4 cows being slaughtered.

On Thursday we had our MLC and it was nice to see everyone again. We had 6 elders staying with us the night before and so it was a party at our apartment. We got to mlc and met president and his wife. Overall the MLC was good, still plenty change. The African missionaries and especially the old missionaries still aren't having it. They gave president some wahala at the meeting. They will just have to get used to all of it. Change is good, some just don't like it. But we prepared for our zone conference which will be this week on Thursday which will be fun.

The sisters in my zone are continuing to teach me how to cook. They have taught me plenty which I am grateful for. This past week they taught me how to make African ice cream! And it is actually pretty darn good. I made some by myself today and so now I know how to make it so when I get back to the states I'll have to make it for the fam and see how they like it. The other things they have taught me how to make I don't even know if I'll be able to make them back home due to not having the same ingredients, but hey I guess we will see.

Elder Mbui and I are still pushing the work forward and are enjoying our time along the way. We are having great experiences every single day. There really is never a dull moment out here. Something comes up every day, it keeps you on your toes. Like on Wednesday as we were waking to one of our areas, a man approached us and said that he had his heart broken. I told him that I was sorry and asked him some few questions. Apparently he said his girlfriend broke his heart and wanted us to go and cast the demons out of her. I had to hold myself from laughing haha. But we talked with him for a bit and he led us to his house. He stays with his girlfriend and so he was shouting at her to come out. I don't do justice to this story, just telling it haha. But he went up to the door and knocked to wake her up. When he knocked he ran past us scared. I was like what the heck did we just get ourselves into haha. So we stepped back a bit because we didn't know why he was running. And the lady came out with a banku stick. She busted out the door and started to run after the man. She caught up with him and started beating him with the banku stick. Keep in mind my companion and I are just standing there witnessing it all. The man is just screaming for us to cast the demons out of her while he is getting beat. The woman then comes back and the man tells us to go inside the house to talk with her. The woman tells us in twi that if we come inside her house she will beat us with her banku stick. Me and my companion looked at each other and said nah you're good, we won't bother you haha. The man wasn't to happy that we didn't help him but what can you do. So after that we carried on our day. Stuff like that happens all the time out here. Things I just sit back and watch and think, only in Ghana.

I hope you all are doing swell. I hope you guys are making the most out of the last little bit of summer! Thanks again for all the love and support. I love you guys!

Welcoming President Kunz and Staying in Bantama

Hello everyone!

It was the last week of the transfer this past week. We had our zone conference with our new mission president and it was great. It was different then past zone conference, but a new mission president brings new things. As zone leaders we had to prepare a 30 minute instruction and after lunch we had a little round Robin. We had 4 zones and so we made 4 groups. The zone Leaders rotated and taught for 2 hours total after lunch. We were very tired but it turned out well. There have been plenty changes made, and there will continue to be changes made. The rest of the mission got to meet president Kunz and his wife as well.

We had the opportunity to do a mass contact in our other sisters area this week as well. We split off into two groups and went into Kromoase. Their area is very nice. Part of it is city and part is bush. I always love going into the bush, it is just so much different then Bantama in the city. We helped our sisters out and they were happy with the fruits of that day.

We got transfer news! I will be staying in Bantama for another transfer with Elder Mbuyi. There are very few missionaries being transferred as the new president just got here. But the good news is we are getting 15 new Obrunis coming in this transfer! And in August another 15 or so. We need them, and are grateful they are coming. It will be nice to get more missionaries in the mission and especially American missionaries. Elder Mbuyi and I are still in charge of transfers so we are looking forward to another busy busy day on Wednesday.

That's all I got this week, I hope all y'all had a great week this past week. Hopefully the heat isn't killing you guys. Keep up the great work and remember God loves you!

A New Mission President

Hey everyone!

Another great and busy week was completed this past week. Our new mission president arrived on Tuesday night and we as an MLC (Missionary Leadership Council) were able to meet him on Wednesday when we had our activity. I love our new president! He is definitely what the mission needs right now. He is and will continue to bring a lot of needed change. We had our MLC on Thursday and got to spend more time with him. President Kunz and his wife recognized me right away as they served with my brother, Eli in his mission in Sierra Leone. With all the change that are coming the older missionaries are a bit hesitant because they aren't a fan of change, but I am loving it. We will have zone conference this week where our other missionaries will get to meet him as well. We will see how they respond to him, but I'm sure they will like him.

We also had our baptismal service yesterday! Isaac, James, and Angel were baptized and it was a great service. Only one or our candidates wasn't able to make it so we will push sister blessings baptism to next Sunday. I was able to baptize James and it was a very good day.

This is the last week of the transfer! We are crazy busy with zone conference and literally everyday this week we have something that will take all day but none of it is in our area, haha the Joys of being a zone leader. We will receive our transfer news on Saturday and so I'll let you know next week what happens with that but I'm sure I'll be staying in Bantama for another transfer but we will see.

I hope you all had a great 4th of July and had fun. I appreciate the love and support and I love all y'all. Have a great week this week!
